Momentum is building around the conversation about the future of downtown. It comes four years after a pandemic sent tens of thousands of office workers home from downtown Minneapolis and downtown St. Paul, never to return (at least not in the same way).

The future of the twin downtowns has been on Cityscape columnist Bill Lindeke’s mind for a while, and we published his recent column — a nod to the late urban planner Jane Jacobs — on our website and last week hosted a MinnPost Social about the topic.

But the conversation lives on, and we’re excited at MinnPost to elevate great journalism and commentary about topics including urban planning, transit, community and civic engagement, economic development and city policies through the Cityscape newsletter. We’ve been at it for a few months now, and it’s been great to watch it grow and for Bill to hear from readers.

Subscribe to Cityscape

Why should you sign up? We need people across our state who care about the future of their cities to participate in critical conversations about that future.

When you sign up for the Cityscape newsletter you’ll not only get a handy link to Bill’s latest column, but you’ll get extra commentary from Bill along with a list of links to other journalism and commentary about urban planning and city life. Bill also invites readers to ask questions or comment on his pieces, and we’re looking to include more of that commentary from readers in each newsletter.

You already know this, but you can also support this work with a financial contribution to MinnPost (there’s even a spot to say how much you love Cityscape). Thank you!

Bill’s column will be back next week with Part 2 on the 10-year anniversary of the Green Line. You can read Part 1 here.
